HIGHWAYS IN THE COASTAL ENVIRONMENT: NEW USA GUIDANCE
نویسندگان
چکیده
There are over 60,000 miles (100,000 km) of coastal highways in the United States (US) that occasionally exposed to waves and water levels. Wise stewardship calls for integration engineering principles practices planning design these roads bridges make them more resilient. A new, 3rd, edition primary guidance document Hydraulic Engineering Circular No. 25 (HEC-25), entitled “Highways Coastal Environment” was recently released by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). It provides on a range issues design, operation highways. This manual should help those with little experience understand and, as appropriate, apply scientific methods approaches unique coast. For experienced engineers, this serve reference providing specific highway-oriented assistance consultation FHWA state Department Transportation projects.

Radio-wave-reflecting Concrete for Lateral Guidance in Automatic Highways
A method for producing radio-wave-reflecting concrete, which is potentially useful for lateral guidance in automatic highways, is provided. In the form of cement paste, it contains a small amount (0.5 vol.%) of 0.1 mm diameter carbon filaments as an admixture. The radiation absorbed is negligible compared to that reflected. The reflectivity at 1 GHz is 10 dB higher for radiowave-reflecting ceme...
متن کاملAtypical Tabularia in Coastal Lake Erie, USA
Tabularia populations collected at a coastal site in Lake Erie, near Cleveland, Ohio, USA exhibit highly abnormal morphology. Frustules may be bent, asymmetric, have irregular striae patterns, irregular margins, or any combination of these characters. The majority of specimens in the collection are abnormal to some degree. Although specimens are so atypical that identification is difficult, rel...

To contribute to an understanding of forest management on secondary forest succession, we conducted vegetation surveys in a chronosequence of pine stands ranging in age from 1 to 59 years. Adjacent areas were compared at 1, 7, 12, and 17 years following two reproduction cutting methods (clearcuts or pine seed-tree cuts); a 59-year-old pine stand that was periodically thinned was also included t...
متن کاملInfluence of Environment, Disturbance, and Ownership on Forest Composition and Structure of Coastal Oregon, Usa
Information about how vegetation composition and structure vary quantitatively and spatially with physical environment, disturbance history, and land ownership is fundamental to regional conservation planning. However, current knowledge about patterns of vegetation variability across large regions that is spatially explicit (i.e., mapped) tends to be general and qualitative. We used spatial pre...
متن کاملNew Highways as Economic Development Tools:
Stimulating economic growth and development in rural and economically lagging regions is the goal of several federal and state highway programs. This paper examines the effectiveness of highway investment as an economic development tool. A quasi-experimental matching method is used to examine the effects of interstate highways on counties which obtained links during the period 1963-75 or are in...
